The ship’s bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shaxs, and Doctor T’Ana. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi must keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies. It'd be a mistake to not give it a shot. What it is: Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the USS Cerritos, in 2380. The Byrde saga might not yet be as good as its spiritual forefather, but it's better than a lot of its cousins (even Bloodline!). Laura Linney (Marty's wife), Jason Butler Harner (an undercover fed), and Julia Garner (one sketchy family's substitute don) also deliver particularly memorable turns to help make this slow-burn work wonders over its tense and dark (like, literally-it looks so dark) runtime. His character's main motivation for doing anything is to protect his family, as he's more someone who's been stuck in this underworld for decades than someone who's trying to take it over. But as Marty Byrde-a brilliant Chicago-based financial advisor who moves his family to Missouri's Ozarks on a life-or-death deadline to wash truck loads of cash for Mexico's second biggest drug cartel-Jason Bateman never goes full Heisenberg, even as he creeps closer and closer to that line in later seasons. It's easy to see why early critics compared Ozark to Breaking Bad: Drug money and morally gray characters abound in both.
